If you build it, they will come. No they won't. That's the sad reality of running a website these days. Simply building a website and doing nothing will not bring in business. Getting traffic to your site should be the hardest part of your job. If it isn't, you are either doing something else wrong or have discovered a secret in marketing that will make you rich beyond your wildest dreams. In fact, the saying should be more like. If you get traffic, they will buy. While this isn't completely true either, for the most part if you can get high traffic you can figure out something to sell to people.
So how do you get people to your site instead of the other ten million sites? The easiest way is unfortunately the most expensive and that is advertising. Get in the search engines and pay for good placement. Use Google Ad Words and similar services. The real secret though is to go offline with your advertising. Billboards, flyers, TV commercials are all good tools. Some aren't as expensive as you would think either. You can get TV commercials on air for under $100 once you have the commercial made.
If you don't have the money for the typical types of advertising then you have to be more creative. The goal really is to create word of mouth. The best way to do this is to get out and talk about your product and build excitement. Give out coupons and create partnerships with companies so that you can help each other. There is no formula to follow here, the key is t stay at it. Results are slow at first but if things go right they will snowball.
